Leasehold Update – the Government Consultation and Scope for further Reform

An update on the current developments in residential leasehold, including the government’s White Paper as it affects leasehold property and the proposed scope for reform following the recent government consultation on ‘Tackling Unfair Practices in the Leasehold Market.’

Stephen Ward, Director of Strategy and External Relations, The Council for Licensed Conveyancers

Helping consumers choose their lawyer

This session will look at transparency of service, quality and price. Stephen will also discuss how regulators are responding to recommendations from the Competition and Markets Authority and what this will mean for firms

Stephen Desmond, solicitor (non-practising) and presenter

Key SDLT Fundamentals, Retainer & Residence

Despite SDLT being a very complex tax, conveyancers are regularly expected to calculate and collect it on chargeable purchases of residential properties.

This short presentation will consider some important issues for conveyancers who do not hold themselves out as tax experts, such as -

•             Is it sufficient to merely say to clients, "We do not advise on tax"?

•             Transfers to connected company

•             The surcharge on ‘second homes’ & when a dwelling is a main residence

•             Government consultation on reducing submission and payment time limits from 30 to 14 days

Rebecca Stopford, The Legal Director

Why does the GDPR apply to law firms?

Every firm is a ‘data controller’ and every firm obviously holds and processes the personal data of not only clients, but also partners and staff.

The GDPR will apply to how firms treat this personal data internally, as part of the conveyancing transaction and beyond when it is added to your CRM for cross selling and marketing.

The GDPR should be on the agenda for action by your firm’s senior management team. Have they started to recognise this significant compliance issue which requires careful attention and resources?  Action is needed now to avoid falling foul of the regulations and the embarrassment of not knowing the law.
